[FREE TRAINING] THE 3 BIGGEST MISTAKES TO AVOID IN YOUR ADOPTION
If you’re watching this, you’re probably thinking I want to adopt a child. But how do I do it successfully? So starting the adoption process is half the battle. But adopting successfully is a whole other story, right?
I wanted to make this video because I’ve talked to you a lot about adoptions, tips on adopting and how to adopt, and I love adoption so much, because my passion is to see children who need be placed in safe and loving homes, and to equip you to open up your home to kids in need, and to grow your family.
But one of the biggest issues with adoption is that it’s nearly impossible to really know for sure, if you will be adopting successfully. Anyone can scour social media and get an idea about how to start your adoption, but knowing how to actually do it successfully, and finding that kind of information on social media, or researching is nearly impossible.
So in this blog, I am going to give you three secrets to adopting successfully within a year.
Secret #1: There are two different words of adoption
The first thing that you need to understand is that there are really two different worlds to adoption. And this is what I mean by that. Think about the movie “The Matrix”. There is the world they used to live in which people were trying to make them think was real. And then there was the real world, which was the matrix. That’s a little bit of how it is with adoption. Social media research, and Google give you a picture of adoption, that is actually not completely true. And then adoption professionals like myself, adoption attorneys, agencies, social workers and such, we’re living in the actual matrix, the actual real world of adoption.
And so a lot of times when people are scouring social media, or Google, they get a picture of adoption that is not completely true. And that’s why a lot of folks end up starting their adoption process, and then get stuck without knowing how to get out of it. So, for example, a lot of folks for whatever reason, maybe it’s just from research or social media, really think that they can adopt an age range like zero to five. But the thing is that reality world in adoption, it’s nearly impossible for you to adopt that age range. Because for you to actually do that, in the real adoption world, you’re gonna need at least two or three different agencies to help you with that age range. And you’re probably looking more into foster care adoption. At that point, the newborn, you’ll have to work with a newborn adoption agency, and a foster care agency. So my point is, people think that zero to five is okay to adopt from and they think that it is going to give them a better chance at adopting and broaden their chances to adopt. But actually, that’s not true. You actually need to be way more specific about the age you want to adopt.
Understanding that is really going to help you adopt successful so that you don’t get stuck in the muck and mire of the adoption process as it’s being displayed on social media, or in research.
Secret #2: Not All Adoption Professionals Are Created Equal
You have to understand that not all adoption professionals are created equal. Not all agencies are created equal. There are so many different types of agencies, and they all have different functions. That’s one of the biggest mistakes that I see people make. Most hopeful adoptive parents choose an agency that someone on social media raved about, without actually understanding that agencies have different functions. If you want to do foster care, you have to go through a foster care agency, meaning an agency that actually helps you adopt from foster care. If you want to adopt a newborn baby, you have to go through a professional whose function is to help you adopt a newborn.
Some agencies only help with home studies. Some agencies offer the full amount of adoption services that you could possibly need. So understanding this will really be helpful so that you don’t get stuck working with an adoption professional who is not right for you.
Secret #3: Word of Mouth is Powerful
The third secret to adopting successfully within a year is to not underestimate the power of a word of mouth. Self-matching has become really popular over the past couple of years because a lot of hopeful adoptive parents are upset about how much it costs to work with an agency. A very powerful tool a lot of hopeful adoptive parents don’t take advantage of is the power of word of mouth. I cannot tell you how many clients I have had in my law office who successfully adopted within about six months, just by simple word of mouth. What I mean by word of mouth is: giving your profile to OBGYN offices, going into your local hospital to let them know you’re adopting, telling all of your friends and family about it etc. It’s become really popular to post your profile on Instagram and to be online, which is also a great way for you to find a match.
But don’t underestimate the power of word of mouth because hopeful adoptive parents are still getting matched that way. And they don’t have to spend a penny on advertising themselves on social media.
Implementing one or all three of these secrets that I just told you will significantly increase your chances at adopting successfully and doing it within a year. So which one of them are you going to try? Comment below and let me know.
