HOW TO GROW YOUR FAMILY THROUGH ADOPTION SUCCCESSFULLY
A lot of families I talk to are shocked when they hear about the price of adoption, but what they don’t realize is that they don’t have to go at it alone. In this blog post, I want to show how you can get help paying for your adoption. While there are other methods, we are going to cover the 6 main ways to fund your adoption.
1. You can apply for adoption grants
There are a ton of organizations out there that can provide you with adoption grants. Some of those include:
● The Gift of Adoption Fund
● Lifesong for Orphans
● Show Hope
One thing to remember about adoption grants is that you need to have your home study completed, approved, and ready to go before you can apply for the grant. Often, a home study consists of gathering and submitting personal documents, completing an interview with the home study worker, and home visits with the social worker.
It’s important to check out these grants and see what your options are because they can potentially knock off a couple of thousands of dollars from your adoption costs!
2. Adoption loans
Adoption loans can help families by offering them a way to pay off the high costs associated with the adoption process over time. Some lenders even provide interest-free loans in certain cases. Some of these organizations include:
● The Hebrew Free Loan Society
● The ABBA Fund
● Pathways For Little Feet
Since the average American family’s savings account isn’t able to cover the full cost of adoption fees and other expenses, adoption loans are popular solutions.
3. Employee benefits program
Did you know that about one-quarter of the nation’s largest employers include some type of adoption benefits? Make sure you check with your employer to find out if you or your partner’s plan includes any adoption benefits.
There is also a special type of insurance that’s given out by a company called ARAG. Many of my clients were able to get their entire adoption completed for less than $1,000 with ARAG Legal Insurance, which saved some of them up to $9,000.
4. Military adoption subsidies
The United States military will reimburse active duty personnel for one-time adoption costs up to $2,000 per child or up to $5,000 per year to military families whose adoptions were arranged by a qualified adoption agency. That also includes up to 21 days of adoption leave to bond with your new child, and health care benefits before the adoption is final.
5. State adoption assistance programs
Adoption subsidies are available for children with special needs that you are adopting. That means the child or children may receive a federally funded subsidy under Title 4E or a state subsidy per state guidelines. Some of the funds might also be available for post-adoption expenses, so make sure to check out your state’s program.
6. Fundraising and matching gift resources
There are so many ways to raise enough money for your adoption. Plenty of families come up with fun and unique ways to fund their adoption process. My favorite fundraiser was a family that had a karaoke night, which included all their friends and family that wanted to help them out with their adoption. Every person that signed up to sing a song paid $20 and each person that did not want to sing paid $30. In the end, they raised over $2,000 in one evening. That goes a long way when it comes to the adoption of your new child!
But there are so many other ways to pay for an adoption. Don’t let the cost hold you back from creating the family that you want. If you want to start growing your family through adoption, please consider these 6 options.
